Lebanon has been grappling with escalating poverty levels
over the past decade, with a staggering 44% of the population now living below
the poverty line. The situation has been further compounded by an alarming
increase in food insecurity. The Integrated Food Insecurity Phase
Classification (IPC) analysis from March 2024 paints a grim picture, projecting
that food insecurity will affect 1.26 million people—23% of the population—by
September 2024. This dire situation is the result of a combination of factors,
including persistent inflation, reduced humanitarian and social assistance,
rising intercommunity tensions, and ongoing governance challenges in Lebanon.
The conflict along the southern border has only added to the plight, displacing
families and disrupting livelihoods.
Outreach Process
In response to this growing crisis, ADRA Lebanon launched the PROVIDE II project, or “Providing Vital and Dignifying Assistance Efficiently II.” This initiative aims to support some of the most vulnerable families in Beirut and Mount Lebanon by improving their access to food and nutrition.
A Multi-Faceted Approach to Addressing Food Insecurity
The PROVIDE II project focuses on empowering 3,226 individuals by providing them with food e-cards that allow them to purchase fresh and nutritious food of their choice. These e-cards are recharged automatically for three months, offering a reliable source of sustenance during these challenging times. The project also integrates a nutrition component, helping beneficiaries to not only access food but also make informed, healthy choices. Informative infographics on affordable and nutritious food options are distributed alongside the e-cards, ensuring that recipients have the knowledge they need to make the best choices for their health.
Key Activities and Outcomes
Distribution of E-Cards: The heart of the PROVIDE II project lies in its distribution of food e-cards. These cards are a lifeline for many, giving them the freedom to select the food items that best meet their needs and preferences. This approach respects the dignity of the beneficiaries, allowing them to make choices that align with their dietary needs and cultural preferences.
Nutrition Awareness: In addition to providing access to food, the project emphasizes the importance of healthy eating. Through infographics and educational materials distributed during e-card handouts and via SMS, beneficiaries gain essential nutrition knowledge. This education empowers them to make healthier food choices and improves overall well-being.
Post-Distribution Monitoring (PDM) and Endline Surveys: To ensure the effectiveness of the project, ADRA Lebanon conducts rigorous monitoring and evaluation activities. PDM visits include checking receipts to assess the quality of purchases and offer alternatives for unhealthy choices. This process ensures accountability and helps fine-tune the assistance provided.
Supporting the Elderly: PROVIDE II also pays special attention to elderly beneficiaries, ensuring they have the support they need to navigate their monthly shopping with ease and dignity.
Reaching Those Most in Need
PROVIDE II directly benefits 3,226 individuals, including 1,487 women, 594 children, and 786 elderly individuals. The project also supports 47 individuals from other nationalities residing in Lebanon. By focusing on the most vulnerable populations, PROVIDE II makes a tangible impact in improving food security for those who need it most.
As Lebanon continues to face unprecedented challenges, the PROVIDE II project represents a beacon of hope for thousands of individuals struggling to put food on the table. ADRA Lebanon remains committed to alleviating hunger, enhancing nutrition, and ensuring food security for the most vulnerable populations in Beirut and Mount Lebanon.
